| Title | [Home of Alexander A. Arthur and family at Harrogate, Tennessee] / [unknown]. |
| Description | This photograph shows "Craig Neuk, " the family home of Alexander A. Arthur, located in Harrogate, Tennessee. Alexander A. Arthur (1846-1912), a Scotch-Canadian by birth, was an engineer and founder of Middlesborough, Kentucky in 1890; Arthur was hired by the "American Association, Ltd" of England, as their general agent for the development of numerous enterprises that were established by the firm such as the Harrogate [Tennessee] Land Company; Watts Steel and Iron Syndicate; Pinnacle Lumber Company; as well as various railroad lines and numerous industries built in the region. It was envisioned that the region would become the "Pittsburgh of the South;" though, this dream of expansive tourism and iron industries was never realized because of the collapse of British financial markets in the early 1890's. |
