Digital Library of
Appalachia Help - Search: advanced search - fields
<< return
Fields are components of each record in the
Digital Library of Appalachia. They help users organize information, such
as identifying all the subjects/topics of a particular record, or assigning two
keywords specifically as a person's name. When you select which fields to
search in the advanced search, you are able to target your keyword search.
The fields are shown as drop-down menus in advanced searches. Click on the down arrow to see available fields.

Sometimes you may see the preferences for handling keywords built into an advanced search screen that selects fields at the same time. Based on your needs you can ask the search engine to find keywords in a specific way in certain fields.

You may type any keywords which are relevant to your keyword search,
then identify the best field to find them.
Sometimes, if you just want to search for similar records from one particular field (say, to find all records with "Jesse Stuart" as the author), you may find better success clicking on a hyperlink in an individual record.
